This is a 19th century antique dome top trunk that has been restored with silvery black polished hardware that blends beautifully with the honey-gold finish of the pine wood body and golden oak slats. The trunk features dated latches from July 1, 1873, original end caps, and new leather handles. There are two nail strips around the body and cover, and a working lock, although there is no key. Inside the lid, there is an original waterproof canvas or tooled leather handle that was once wrapped in protective paper that was removed during restoration, exposing the beautifully aged and cured pine wood that is over 100 years old.
To protect the trunk, a spar varnish has been applied to all surfaces, providing a rough barrier coating, protection from sunlight in sunny spaces, and repelling water or humidity. This large antique dome top trunk would make a great military or navy retreat present, shadow box idea, or storage trunk. It can also be used as a US Navy, Marine Corps, Army, or Air Force retirement gift, and repurposed as a shadow box idea for any of these branches. It is also referred to as a steamer trunk or Victorian trunk.
